Both teams had their chances, but the Boston Whistlers eventually prevailed.
The Boston Whistlers racked up a win at Scorpion Stadium, bumping off the Syracuse Scorpions, 4-3. Mario Ruiz, who started for Boston, pitched effectively for his team. Ruiz, now 6-1, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing 3 runs. Blake Bryant nailed down his 16th save.
Tied up with the Scorpions in the top of the fourth inning, the Whistlers got a boost from catcher Mike Fowler. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Fowler saw a 1-1 fastball from Dylan Diggs and hit a 2-run single to break the stalemate and put Boston on top, 3-1.
"My job is to go out and execute," said Ruiz.
Boston improves to 38-27 with the win. They lead their division by 6 games.
