Heathens Edge Royals, 6-5
|
The Halifax Heathens weathered an outstanding game by Cincinnati designated hitter Rick Brown to topple the Royals, 6-5. Brown went 2-4 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Halifax pitcher Pat Nicholas got the win. He's now 1-0. Stuart Maness was tagged with the loss. Jeff Buck wrapped it up, recording his 14th save.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the top of the seventh, with the game tied, Andres Vega was at the plate when Halifax scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Heathens to go in front, 5-4.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Vega told a Halifax Herald reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
The third-place Heathens hiked their record to 26-33.
