The Fountain Hills 23ers withstood a fine game by Detroit center fielder Steve McLaughlin at Fountain Park, to upend the Giants, 9-4. McLaughlin slugged 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. With the win over Detroit, the 23ers improved to 71-83.

Jim Gavilanes had a big 2-run double for the 23ers in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Fountain Hills leading 3-2 and the bases loaded, he got a curveball from 31-year old left-handed pitcher Quito Herrera and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 5th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the 23ers ahead, 5-2.

"We were able to get some things going offensively," said Gavilanes.
