The Phoenix Gladiators besoiled an otherwise fine performance by Indianapolis third baseman Victor Mendez by beating the Eagles, 6-3, at Eagles Stadium. Mendez went 3 for 3 with a home run, 2 singles, and a walk. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. The winning pitcher was Johnny Keener. He tossed 93 pitches over 5.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on 11 hits. With the victory, the Gladiators upped their record to 71-67.
Phoenix won the game in part because of Aaron Carr. The third baseman ripped a grand slam home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Gladiators ahead, 6-2. For the game, Carr had 1 double and 1 home run in 4 at-bats.
"We had some nice at-bats at the right time," said Gladiators manager Brett Bartlett.
