Oakland Earns 7-6 Win
|
Led by Jared Smith, the Oakland Invaders defeated the Boston Whistlers, 7-6, in 10 innings. Smith was 2 for 3 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once for the Invaders. Tom Paolucci, now 4-1, was credited with the win in 2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on no hits, while striking out 1 and walking 1. By defeating Boston, the second-place Invaders improved to 21-17.
Oakland used the clutch hitting of Steve McKinstry to snag the win. The first baseman drilled a solo home run in the top of the tenth inning to put the Invaders ahead, 7-6. It was his lone hit in 5 at-bats, but it was a crucial one.
"The game is never over 'til it's over," said a jubilant Adam Ponder, the Oakland skipper.
