Mt. Vernon used a superb performance from starting pitcher Jon Maddock to down the Savannah Alpines, 4-1. Mike Driskell was credited with the save, his 14th in 19 tries. The first-place Cyclones, at 77-58, now lead their division by 5½ games.

Leo Carballo had a big 3-run home run for the Cyclones in the bottom of the second inning. With Mt. Vernon leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he sized up a cutter from 22-year old right-handed pitcher Adam Monteleone and punished it. The result was his 14th home run of the season, which put the Cyclones on top, 4-0.

Carballo told a local reporter: "My job is to go out and play as hard as I can."
