Boston left fielder Willie Kirkham was a significant contributor in his team's 10-7 triumph over the Detroit Giants. He was 2 for 4 with a home run and a walk, while scoring 2 times and driving in 5 for the Whistlers. Boston reliever Scott Johnson got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Dave Shevlin was tagged with the loss. Blake Bryant picked up the save, his 2nd.

With Boston leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Kirkham hit a fastball from Dave Shevlin for a grand slam home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season and put the Whistlers ahead, 6-1.

"It doesn't matter if you're 10 games over .500 or 10 games under, it feels good to win," Kirkham told the Boston Daily.

Now 4-6, the Giants have gotten off to a poor start.
