The 2024 season did not get off to quite the start the Detroit Giants had hoped, with an opening day loss to the Austin Desperados at Ballpark of Detroit. The final score was 13-4. Shortstop Paul Ainsworth was the top performer for Austin. Luke Scrimger earned the win to go to 1-0. He allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, with no walks and 4 strikeouts in 7 innings of work.

Dave Jimenez had a big 2-run home run for the Desperados in the top of the second inning. With Austin leading 1-0 and a runner on 3rd, he sized up a changeup from Julian Bryant, who led the AC in wins with 18 in 2022, and punished it. The result was his 1st home run of the season, which put the Desperados on top, 3-0.

"We took advantage of our opportunities," Ainsworth told the Austin Times. "It's as simple as that."
