So rare that it is more a figment of the imagination than an actual possibility for a professional ballplayer, the near-mythical perfect game became reality for Jon Boyd.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders right-hander dominated the TCU Horned Frogs at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park, securing the 11-0 Red Raiders victory and a place for himself in the history books.

"As a kid I imagined pitching a perfect game, but it was only a fairy tale -- I didn't really ever expect to pitch one," Boyd said later, sitting in the clubhouse with a crowd of reporters. "I don't want to demean it, but I've lost games where I had better stuff than I had today. It all just fell into place in this one."

The 18-year-old Boyd retired all 27 Horned Frogs batters in a row. He surrendered no hits, walked none, struck out 6 and permitted no one to get on base.

This year, Boyd has worked 54.2 innings with 45 strikeouts en route to a 3-1 record and a 2.80 ERA.
