Capitols Stop Boll Weevils, 5-2
|
The Augusta Capitols polished off the Miami Boll Weevils by the score of 5-2. The largest share of the credit belonged to right fielder Chris Wunderlich. Wunderlich was 2-3 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once for the Capitols. Dave Figley got the win, improving to 1-0. He held the Boll Weevils to 2 runs on 4 hits over 5.2 innings, while striking out 4 and walking 0. Jeff Cox got the save, the 5th for him this season.
With Augusta leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Wunderlich batted against Miami pitcher Gerardo Matute. Wunderlich hit a fastball to left-center for a 3-run home run. His 1st home run of the season put the Capitols on top, 5-0.
"It was our day today," Wunderlich told the Augusta Chronicle. "But we've got to keep our nose to the grindstone."
The Boll Weevils drop to 5-8, as their stumbling start to the 2024 season continues.
