Boll Weevils Come Up Short at Vail, 3-2
|
Starting pitcher Steve Pikula gave the Vail Tigercats a rock-solid effort. The Tri-Lakes, Indiana native helped his team defeat the Miami Boll Weevils, 3-2, at Vail Grounds. In 6.2 innings, Pikula surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 2. He allowed 1 run. Earning his 3rd save of the year was Robert Hendricks.
The Boll Weevils had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Tigercats going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 29-year old left fielder Ian McKibbins came to the plate. McKibbins hit a 2-run home run on a 1-1 curveball from Miami hurler Joe Underwood. It was McKibbins's 2nd home run of the year.
McKibbins called the win a testament to his team's "grit."
The defeat makes Miami 5-8.
