Medford starter Jose Diaz put the Newport offense in a vise grip. The right-hander relied heavily on his fastball in leading the Desperados to a 5-0 win. Diaz, the winner, moves to 4-0. He threw 6.2 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 3 and giving up 1 walk. Now 11-32, Newport has dropped 11 straight.

The Desperados benefited from a costly error in the top of the sixth. With Todd Gordon at bat and Medford leading 1-0, the Newport miscue allowed Medford to plate 1 and take the lead, 2-0.

"Whatever it takes to win," said Gordon. "That's our attitude."
