Unicorns Squelch Hex Offense in Shutout Win
|
The Newport Unicorns went home winners at Chanticleers Ballpark, thanks in large part to starter Alex Almanza. Almanza stifled the Providence Hex, enabling Newport to grab the 3-0 win. In 5.1 innings, Almanza surrendered 1 hit, while striking out 9 and walking 4. He allowed no runs. At 15-19, Newport is in 5th place in the Sub League 1 East Division.
Newport right fielder Jeff May contributed a timely at-bat in the bottom of the first. With two down, he hit a fastball to right field for a run-scoring single. It was his 27th hit of the season and put the Unicorns ahead, 1-0.
"We're feeling good in this clubhouse right now after that one," May told the Newport Bulletin.
