Nationals Best Wolverines, 5-1
|
The Jacksonville Nationals took Riverside pitcher Ken Hicks's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Nationals Park. The final score had Jacksonville getting past the Wolverines, 5-1. Hicks went 6.1 innings and allowed 2 runs, striking out 6. The win went to Zack Scott in relief. His record improves to 2-0. Ken Hicks took the loss. The loss drops Riverside to 10-9.
The Wolverines had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Nationals going into the bottom of the fifth inning. That changed quickly when the 19-year old left fielder Rick Gruber came to the plate. Gruber hit a 2-run home run on a 0-2 fastball from Riverside hurler Ken Hicks. It was Gruber's 5th home run of the year.
Jacksonville manager Zack Glomski commended his team for exhibiting "no shortage of effort."
