The Whitby Bats wasted an impressive 8-inning effort from starter Graham Renner, falling, 1-0, to the Long Island Torpedoes at Centerville Grounds. Jose Zapata was the winner. Over 5.2 innings, he yielded no runs on 1 hit, with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. Steven Rudolph, summoned from the bullpen, notched his 7th save.

The Torpedoes got a big boost from center fielder Earl Leason who had a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning off Bats hurler Graham Renner. It was his 9th RBI of the season and put Long Island on top, 1-0.

"That's how you're going to be successful," said Torpedoes manager Victor Sepulveda. "It starts with pitching and it will always be pitching."

Long Island, at 13-25, occupies last place in the Northern Conference East Division.
